Amorphophallus sagittarius | The West Java Endemic Recorded Only Once on iNaturalist Amorphophallus sagittarius is one of five Amorphophallus species endemic to Java — and one of the least documented of all. Formally described by van Steenis in 1953, it has only a single confirmed observation on iNaturalist and no formal IUCN Red List assessment to date. A. sagittarius is distinguished from the closely related A. variabilis by two key characters: a short peduncle (up to 21 cm vs. up to 120 cm) and a spadix that sub-equals the spathe in length rather than exceeding it. Its known localities are restricted to Bogor and Sukabumi in West Java. Fruit and seed morphology remain undocumented. No population estimate exists in the published literature. Amorphophallus variabilis in full anthesis
Amorphophallus manta is one of the most narrowly distributed species in the entire genus Amorphophallus — known from a single valley system in West Sumatra, with limited additional records from Peninsular Malaysia. A. manta belongs to the Paeoniifolius-Manta clade within subgenus Amorphophallus, alongside species such as A. paeoniifolius and several Bornean relatives. Its known wild range is restricted to Harau Valley Nature Reserve (Cagar Alam Lembah Harau), Lima Puluh Kota Regency, West Sumatra — a protected canyon ecosystem at 500–850m elevation. This species currently has no formal IUCN Red List assessment, despite a range size that would likely qualify it as threatened under Criterion B.
